Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death

Patrick Henry (an American colonist) Wrote this Document to the President of the Colonies of America. He wrote very passionately the truth that many of the Americans weren't seeing. The Americans were trying not to see what was really happening. The British were sending their armies over and it wasn't to "win back their love." They were planning to attack. They need to fight back because words weren't helping. The British disregarded the words they said to them. The only solution is to fight. The British said that the Americans were weak, but when are they going to become strong. When they are under attack? That is to late. The only way to make peace is to fight. This is what Patrick is trying to persuade the Colonists of America to do. They need to fight.

Synthesis

The British were a big part of the Americans lives, and the Americans had no intention of disconnecting from Great Britain. Great Britain had been thought of as taking care of the Americans, and Americans were so proud to call themselves British. The Britain's were the Americans source of trade and the Americans did not want to create a war with them. The Americans liked Great Britain so much that they even sent their children there to get an education. In fact, the Americans thought that Great Britain was better then them, but in realty America was better taken care of and had more freedom. American colonies were the land for opportunity.

Life was perfect the way the Americans had been living. They made their own taxes and ran their own government. Out of the blue, Great Britain decided to make an Act of Parliament. The first act was the Stamp Act. They put a tax on every little thing in America. This Stamp Act created a fire storm in the American colonies. They weren't used to being run by a parliament, and this parliament was taxing everything they had. The Americans felt as if they were as low as servants and disagreed fully against the Stamp Act. They believed that it was wrong for Great Britain to create such a thing without the consent from all the colonies in America.

The American Colonies decided they had to do something about the Stamp Act, and that's when the Circular Letter from the Boston Committee of Correspondence came into play. This letter was sent out to all the sister colonies in search for the unity of America against Great Britain. The solution the Boston Committee came up with was to suspend all trade with Great Britain. They wanted to teach Britain a lesson. I saw the letter to be written as kind of in shock that Britain would do this to them, and as a call for their families help. The letter from the New York Committee of Fifty-One to the Boston Committee of Correspondence was written as a reply to the request of the Boston Committee. The New York Committee agreed to help such a wonderful colony as Boston, yet they wanted to gather all the colonies together to decide if this solution was the correct path to take.

After about five months since the letters between New York and Boston, a Declaration and resolves of the First Continental Congress was released. New York's plan went into action, and all the colonies got together to make their decision as a whole. The declaration was a way to show Britain that they weren't going to take the way they were being treated. They wanted a say in their taxation and the Stamp Act was completely Britain's plan to break down America. The Stamp Act and All the Acts that come after this event are all Acts of Parliament that lead to Americas independence.

Declaration and Resolves of the First Continental Congress

The conversation in the letters between the Boston Committee and the New York Committee stated that they wanted to make a large committee between all the sister colonies. In this document there request went into action and they created this Declaration. This document declares the trouble that Great Britain as put on the colonies in the Americas. The declaration then states the resolves and rights of the English colonies.

Letter from the New York Committee of Fifty-One to the Boston Committee of Correspondence; May 23, 1774

10 days after the circular letter of the Boston Committee, the New York Committee replies to them. They state that they want to help Boston for they are such a respectable colony, but the New York Committee citizens got together and decided that they cannot make a decision. They believe that they need to have an assembly of all the sister colonies to make one decision as a whole. There request is that Boston Committee of Correspondence replies and grants their request to for a large committee of all the colonies.

Essay #1 reflection

This essay was a transition for me between the simple five paragraph essay i wrote in high school, and the essays we wrote using "They Say, I Say." I really liked using "They Say, I Say" as sort of a template for my essay. It was a great way to organize my thoughts on the comments of someone else, and the information given. My writing philosophy still stays the same and is applied to everything I write. The new way of writing that I have learned from using "They Say, I Say" is just a way to organize the skills from my writing philosophy.

At the start of Bacon's Rebellion I didn't have a very good understanding about what really went on in this event. Even after the wiki entry, I wasn't 100% confident, but after all the research and critical thinking I had to do to complete this essay I felt that I gained a much better understanding of what really happened. Before this essay I didn't feel like my view on Bacon's Rebellion was correct, but i came to learn that everyone has their own view and it is their interpretation.

My writing philosophy:
~When creating a piece of literature, I try to make it personal and honest. Even if there is an assignment that i have no interest in, i always find a way to put myself into the work. My philosophy is to always state my opinion and use my heart to let the reader know that the words came from me. Your hands may be what write the words on paper, but your heart is what creates the words and put them together to define you. You cant write a worthy paper without using your own personal experiences and prior knowledge.

Text Analysis: petition of the house of burgesses to the house of commons

Petition of the Virginia House of Burgesses to the House of Commons: December 18, 1764

Who is writing?
~The Virginia House of Burgesses is writing to the House of Commons, as stated in the title.

Who is the audience?
~The audience is the House of Commons, but to be more specific: "To the Honourable the Knights, Citizens, and Burgesses of Great Britain in Parliament assembled"

Who do the writers represent?
~They represent the colonists or the people who are effected by the stamp act.

What is being said, argued and/or represented?
~The House of Burgesses is requesting that the House of Commons take into consideration the people who will suffer from the British Parliament Stamp Act, and not pass the Stamp Act. The House of Burgesses demonstrates the sufferings from the colonists, and states that it is unconstitutional to pass the stamp act without the people's consent.

How is it being said , argued and/or requested?
~This petition is being stated in a very kind and professional way. They list the many sufferings that will harm the people to persuade the House of Commons into not passing the Stamp Act.

What proof and/or justification is being used to legitimize the request?
~The Petition is legitimate because the House of Burgesses uses examples to justify there comments to show the House of Commons that they are legitimate. In the first paragraph, they state that the council and the House of Burgesses met in General Assembly, and then goes on to tell what they came up with. This helps you realize that this is legitimate.

Bacon’s Rebellion

Who do you want to run our country? Barrack Obama; the person who wants to make a change, or John McCain; who is said to be just like president George Bush. Many people want that change that Obama has offered. Bacon’s Rebellion is an example of leadership that we see, and want to see in our society. In the time of the rebellion, William Berkeley was a governor in Virginia who everyone disliked. For a lot of people he was the George Bush, or John McCain of today. As for the Barrack Obama, there was a man by the name of Nathaniel Bacon. Nathaniel Bacon was ready to make a change for the colonists of Virginia. Many people say that Nathaniel bacon himself was the cause for the revolt. In reality, the poor leadership given by the government of Virginia led to the uprising of Bacon’s Rebellion.

A governors role in society is to lead in an effective way, yet William Berkeley made many faults as a governor. He mistreated everyone except the wealthy colonists. He was an unfair man who took advantage of the poor to help himself. Lower class such as the farmers and the frontiersmen were treated wrongly. The lower class already lived in poverty, and Berkeley himself pushed them into deeper poverty. “ He made taxes high, the prices for tobacco low, resentment against special privileges given to those close to the governor,” and Berkeley did not defend the frontier against attacks by the Native Americans (encyclopedia). This difficult matter made it hard for the farmers and frontiersmen to survive in such poverty. “The Frontiersmen felt that the colonial government had let them down.” (Zinn pg.36). The Native Americans and the Frontiersmen were not very fond of each other. The Frontiersmen wanted to clear up the anger once and for all by using violence to attack. William Berkeley wouldn’t allow this to happen. His plan was to keep peace with the Native Americans, even if it meant that his men would suffer on the frontier. William Berkeley only thought about himself, and didn’t take into mind the concerns of the people around him. "For having protected, favored, and emboldened the Indians against his majesty's loyal subjects, never contriving, requiring, or appointing any due or proper means of satisfaction for their many invasions, robberies, and murders committed upon us." (declaration). He kept the Native Americans on a higher status then the farmers and the frontiersmen. The Government favored and protected the Native Americans over their own people after Berkeley got taken out of office. Berkeley and his fellow representatives never appointed any crimes the Native Americans took place in, therefore the Native Americans got away with their crimes with out punishments. William Berkeley cared for the Native Americans more then his own colonists for which he is supposed to have been leading as governor.

The many colonists of Virginia lived in poverty caused by the Government, even so, the Government did nothing to help them in their times of need. The Government had plenty of options to help the colonist, but instead of creating a better living environment they made it worse. This effected the ones living in poverty in the most harsh way. The government put them down there with their unfair taxes, and they only pushed them farther down with their selfishness. The Declaration by Nathaniel Bacon states that the Government “raised great unjust taxes,” created private favorites, and did not “in any measure advance this hopeful colony either by fortifications, towns, or trade.” The Government made no attempts in helping the colonists living in poverty, so they found a leader in Nathaniel Bacon. The government was disliked by the farmers because he was a horrible leader. “Bacon became a popular leader when he supported farmers who felt left out of the governing process and needed protection from Native Americans who raided their farms” (library reference). The colonists found a much better leader in Nathaniel Bacon. Bacon created a favorable living environment for all the colonists by changing the unjust laws so they would treat people as equals.

Nathaniel Bacon ran the Government in a more effective way for a variety of people, unlike William Berkeley and his men. William Berkeley placed a higher emphasis on the wealthy colonists, and mistreated the lower class. Nathaniel Bacon made attempts to help the farmers and frontiersmen in the lower class, and succeeded. The textbook refers to Nathaniel Bacon as a great leader. He changed laws to better the colony. “The laws gave local settlers a voice in setting tax levies, forbade officeholders from demanding bribes or other extra fees for carrying out their duties, placed limits on holding multiple offices, and restored the vote to all freemen.” (textbook). Nathaniel Bacon restored the laws to the way they should have been. Meaning that all men are treated equal according to the laws.

Bacon’s Rebellion created a lot of effects on the Virginian society, and some of those effects are still relevant to today. There were many issues concerning the gap between the Rich and the Poor. During the Rebellion, the poor were mistreated and the rich were favored. There was William Berkeley who favored the wealthy and abused the poor, but there was also Nathaniel Bacon who tried to change that problem. Bacon was a savior for the poor. He took the taxes away and created a more equal environment. After watching all the presidential debates, this situation reminds me of the society we live in today, and the presidential candidates. We live in a society with different social classes. The wealthy, middle, and lower class. The middle and lower classes are not treated as well as the upper class. The lower classes are impacted by the taxes, and all the environmental issues (i.e., gas prices). Similar to Nathaniel Bacon; Barrack Obama is running for president to make the change for the mistreated lower class. The corrupted government as the cause for Bacon’s Rebellion shows the type of government we live in today.

Free write on the slavery images and the Equiano accounts

Slaves were treated so horribly. While looking at these images and hearing about their torture, I felt sick to my stomach. How could a human do something so horrible to another human. If you just think of being in the same position as a slave, you would feel their pain. It is so crazy how there were so many slaves forced onto a ship. It was like the white men took away there dignity, because they didn't fight back. There were so many slaves and they could have overpowered the white men, yet they didn't fight back. There were probably less white men then slaves, so the slaves had them out numbered also.

Background: Bacon's Rebellion was a revolt in 1676 led by a man by the name of Nathaniel Bacon.

I. William Berkeley showed poor leadership as the Governor.

----A. William Berkeley was disliked by the lower class, and the frontiersmen.

--------1. Historians say that Berkeley treated the frontiersmen and lower class in an unfair manner. The encyclopedia states that: "He made taxes high, the prices for tobacco low, resentment against special privileges given to those close to the governor," and Berkeley did not defend the frontier against attacks by Native Americans.

--------2. Howard Zinn's book," A young Peoples History of the United States," notes that the Government let the frontiersmen down. The Native Americans and the frontiersmen had problems, and the frontiersmen wanted to resolve the problem by fighting. Berkeley wouldn't allow them to.

II. The Virginian Government had no attempts in helping the colonists in their times of need.

----A. Instead of creating a better living environment the government made it a worse environment, especially for the colonists living in poverty.

--------1. Number 1 of The Declaration by Nathaniel Bacon states that the Government "raised great unjust taxes," created private favorites, and did not " in any measure advance this hopeful colony either by fortifications, towns, or trade."

--------2. Bacon, Nathaniel. Colonial America Reference Library. Vol. 3: Biographies: Volume 1. Detroit: UXL, 2000. p1-7. This passage states that the government was disliked by the farmers. "Bacon became a popular leader when he supported farmers who felt left out of the governing process and needed protection from Native Americans who raided their farms."

----B. The Declaration by Nathaniel Bacon also states in number 4, that the government favored and protected the Native Americans over their own people after Berkeley got taken out of office.

--------1. Berkeley and his fellow representatives never appointed any crimes the Native Americans took place in, therefore the Native Americans got away with their crimes.III. Nathaniel Bacon ran the government in a more effective way than William Berkeley and his men.

----A. Nathaniel Bacon made attempts to help the mistreated lower class, and succeeded.

--------1. The textbook refers to Nathaniel Bacon as a great leader. He changed laws to better the colony. Those laws were: " the laws gave local settlers a voice in setting tax levies, forbade officeholders from demanding bribes or other extra fees for carrying out their duties, placed limits on holding multiple offices, and restored the vote to all freemen."

Discussion: Many people say that Nathaniel Bacon was and his choices were the cause of the Rebellion. In my view, I think the Government and William Berkeley's choices led to the cause of the Rebellion. Although not all sources are always credible, the sources used to show my reasoning were very logical and also used sources to support their information. Along the line of sources, in eventually would end up to a reliable source such as a primary document. Sources can not always be trusted or used due to biased points of view, but their are unbiased sources that influenced this paper.

John Winthrop quotes

-Quote 1-

- The benefit of a well coordinated body is that the job gets done. When your body works together you can achieve more. The body cant work with only part able to do anything, so if all the body parts work together are able to do many more things.

-The metaphor of the body makes sense to Winthrop's audience because his audience is very christian. When referring to the body Christians see it in a different way then just the thing you use to get around. They see it as a metaphor used to describe everything put together, and working together.

-When referring to the body as a colony, if the the colonists aren't working together then the colony will fall apart. All the pieces to a colony need to work in sync to be able to run smoothly.

-quote 2-
- The word new in this context means another chance to improve and make better.
- They chose the name New England because they wanted to keep their connection with England, but yet they were adding what they thought they needed and weren't getting in England. They still wanted their roots.

-quote 3-
- the commission that they wanted was to do what God was telling them to do, but in return for his gratitude. They believed that God was leading them to build this colony in a way of religion.

-quote 4-
- Winthrop viewed the MA Bay Co. as an example for the future colonists and colonial efforts. They were sort of a test to see if they could succeed.
- "City upon a hill," means being the role model or example of a Godly colony. They were looked at as an example of a colony built by God, and every one was waiting to see if the colony could survive.

JSTOR: database review

I explored the JSTOR database. When first beginning my Bacon's Rebellion search I wasn't used to using this certain database, so it went really slow and frustrating. After a couple of deep breaths, I began my search again and was successful. I found that a lot of the different points of view were all in the same journal. I also found that when i wasn't clear about what i was looking for in regards to Bacon's Rebellion, they had no information to give me. I used the advanced search, so there was plenty of room to list details to narrow down the search. Next time i use JSTOR, i will try to be more prepared with details i want to look into. I didn't seem to know what i was really looking for, even though I wrote notes down in class earlier that day. I did seem to find a couple of good resources.

National College Fair

1) A public college: Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. This school offers programs that involve three year plans to earn your Bachelors degree. They are a focused school, but they don't specialize in Nursing as far as i want to go.

A private college: Gonzaga is a private college in Spokane, WA. It is a Catholic college, and they provide nursing as a major. They also have a volleyball team though i am not sure how good they are. They provide many clubs and activities. Gonzaga encourages you to grow in your education. All classes are taught by a professor and the student to faculty ratio is 11:1.

A rural college: Yakima Valley Community College is a small college that specializes in nursing. You can go to this college and earn your degree as a RN. They also offer AP classes. This college does have sports teams. They do not have boarding on campus.

A Traditional large university: The University of Washington is a very large school located here in Seattle, WA. They have a really good medical program, and also have their own hospital. They do take PSEC college credits, but might enroll you as a freshman. Their average enrollment is 40,218 people.

A small alternative college: St.Kate's is an all women's school in St.Paul, MN. This school is based on a Catholic tradition, but encourages any religion. They are known for their nursing. They also share classes and resources with four other schools: Augsburg college, Hamline University, Macalester College, and University of St.Thomas.

2) Three colleges that are known for nursing are The University of Washington, Montana State University, and Mount St.Mary's College. What impressed me about UW is that they have their own hospital to use for practice. Montana State University made me want to go there because of the location, and the huge variety of nursing degrees they offer that I want to be a part of. Finally, Mount St. Mary's College intrigued me because of the nursing program, they are Catholic, and they expanded their nursing labs. UW would be a nice place to go because it is close to home and my family, and because they have their own hospital I might become a better nurse because of the practice. MSU really sounds like a great place to earn my education because of their excellent nursing program. It would also be a fun experience being in a new part of the world, far from home. If I went to MSMC I would learn in a more Catholic environment and it would not only help me grow in nursing, but it would help me grow in my faith.

3) I attended a workshop about preparing for an effective admissions packet. The information I received at this workshop included what to take into mind when writing your admissions essay, and how to sell yourself. It also included a reason for a good admissions packet. Its reason is not only to get accepted, but also to determine how much you have to pay. It sounds like a good and effective workshop, but the information gathered wasn't put in a way that could help me.

4) The college fair was a great experience, though very overwhelming even with preparation. There were a lot of schools there, but it was hard for me to find a school with my major. One point that i didn't like about the college fair would be the fact that the schools don't show or display what major their schools specialize in, and what they are known for. The most useful information I gathered from the college fair would be that almost no schools there new anything about PSEC, and I really need to talk to an admissions officer to give them the full scoop of what PSEC is, and get the full understanding back. I am still not completely sure about what the colleges are looking for in a new student, and when excepting a new student. To continue my educational and career planning, I think that I still need time to explore more colleges, and attend the college fair next year. In between that time I will look into colleges on the Internet.

They say 2: Bacon's Rebellion

It is often said by historians that Bacon's Rebellion was a dispute over Virginia's Indian policy. The Rebellion was led by Nathaniel Bacon. According to an excerpt in Howard Zinn's A Young People's History of The United States, "White frontiersmen started the uprising because they were angry about the way the colony was being run." Using Document #4 as a reference, they also agree with Zinn stating that the White frontiersmen Began the uprising. Document #4 says,"In September 1675, Col. Mason and a thousand Virginians trapped the Susquehannocks in an Indian fortress across the Potomac river in Maryland and laid siege to it." These two quotes refer to the Virginians creating the beginning of the mess.

On the contrary, other historians believe that the Natives created the uprising. Document #1 states, after describing the other causes, "Fourthly, the disturbance given by the Indians...." This means that they think the Natives started the Rebellion. Not only do historians believe that the Natives began the uprising, but they think that Bacon began the Rebellion due to his anger towards the Indians, and wanted war. Group 8's edit of the Wikipedia page says in the third paragraph that Bacon wanted to attack the Indians, but Governor Berkeley refused him.

Other Documents such as the first handout of the Declaration infers that because Nathaniel Bacon disliked the Indians, his "private battle" started the dispute between the Virginians and the Indians. The main cause of the uprising was the event when Sir William Berkeley refused to approve Bacon's request of starting an attack against the Native Americans. Berkeley's intentions were to hold peace with the Natives, as written in many different pieces of literature. The text book notes that Governor Berkeley wanted to minimize the contact between settlers and the Natives, in regards of keeping peace.

Bacon was elected into the House of Burgesses, and was then arrested by Berkeley for attempting to take his seat at the assembly. Once Bacon was released, he formed his own militia and persuaded Berkeley into granting his commission. He gave in, and then Bacon led his men into war with the Natives. The Governor, Berkeley, proclaimed Bacon and his men as traitors and rebels. Bacon gained the capital, but feared that he could not withstand Berkeley's attack. To solve his problem, Bacon pushed Governor Berkeley out of Jamestown by setting the town on fire. When Bacon suddenly died, Berkeley regained control of the rebels and killed off all of Bacon's allies. As a result, tensions between the colonists and natives went down, and Bacon's Rebellion changed the history of Jamestown.

free write 3rd quote

In this 3rd quote, The darkest region of the political field represents a very corrupt government. In this corrupt government, the condemned man, or in other words the prisoners or slaves, represent the complete opposite of the king or slave owner. In other words, the thoughts and actions the slaves produce are the opposite views their higher authorities have.

The first ides that comes to my mind when reading this quote is sports. When practicing a sport, your coach forces you to do exercises such as running until you feel as if your going to die. Of course this doesn't even compare to the torture the slaves/ servants got. In this context the quote could mean so many things. When relating the quote to slavery, the "power relations" to me means the owner of the slaves. The force and control over the bodies belong to them.

The body is more productive when being forced to do something, was my first reaction to the quote. After more thought and contemplation, i realized that what they were trying to say is that the slaves and servants are such strong and dominating people, yet they were over powered by their owners.

American Tobacco and European Comsumers

The reading, American Tobacco and European Consumers, demonstrates that the Chesapeake were built on tobacco. The Chesapeake thrived on the growth of their tobacco because many people are willing to buy it. The Eastern side of the Atlantic, and the Europeans desire and addiction to tobacco was the only reason it had commercial value. Some Europeans hated tobacco, most commonly King James I. King James I noted that it was not healthy and harmful to your body. Most people, excluding King James, loved tobacco. The physicians thought of tobacco as being a wonder drug, when the Spaniards brought it to them, because of the effect the drug had on people. As we all know, tobacco is highly addictive and gives you a "joyous intoxication," causing them to want and need it even more.

Although tobacco was addictive and in high command, it was expensive in the 1600's. This was true due to the amount of tobacco growth. Tobacco was scarce, and as the amount of tobacco that was being produced in the 1700's grew, the price reduced. American tobacco became the first product to be highly consumed by the Europeans. Smoking became the most common thing to do. It became a part of their culture, and every day life.
