Governor William Berkeley's poor leadership towards his colony led to the uprising of Bacon's Rebellion

I. Berkeley didn't grant Nathaniel Bacon his commission to attack against the Native Americans.
A. Bacon led the attack towards the Natives privately
1. Berkeley didn't try to stop Bacon, but instead gave into Bacon's request.
II. Berkeley didn't attempt to to stop the Native Americans attacks on the Frontier.
A. Berkeley didn't keep peace with them
1. Bacon wanted revenge.
III. Berkeley had poor government leadership.
A. He couldn't stand up against Bacon
1. Bacon took his place in office
2. Once Bacon died, Berkeley took back his chair
B. The rebellion ended when Bacon died
1. shows his good leadership
IV. Berkeley was disliked by small farmers and Frontiersmen
A. He was unfair with his treatment
1. Treated the lower class different
a. Higher taxes
b. Low tobacco prices
c. lack of protection from the Natives attacks
V. Berkeley favored the Rich over the lower class/ ordinary people
A. Rich landowners controlled most of Eastern Virginia
1. Lower ordinary people were forced to the dangerous Frontier
B. Ordinary people were treated worse than the rich
1. Lower class were living in poverty
a. Berkeley wouldn't help them
b. made it worse with the high taxes and not enough income on tobacco
2. They found a leader in Bacon
a. Bacon went into office
b. Led them into a Rebellion
