John Winthrop quotes

-Quote 1-

- The benefit of a well coordinated body is that the job gets done. When your body works together you can achieve more. The body cant work with only part able to do anything, so if all the body parts work together are able to do many more things.

-The metaphor of the body makes sense to Winthrop's audience because his audience is very christian. When referring to the body Christians see it in a different way then just the thing you use to get around. They see it as a metaphor used to describe everything put together, and working together.

-When referring to the body as a colony, if the the colonists aren't working together then the colony will fall apart. All the pieces to a colony need to work in sync to be able to run smoothly.

-quote 2-
- The word new in this context means another chance to improve and make better.
- They chose the name New England because they wanted to keep their connection with England, but yet they were adding what they thought they needed and weren't getting in England. They still wanted their roots.

-quote 3-
- the commission that they wanted was to do what God was telling them to do, but in return for his gratitude. They believed that God was leading them to build this colony in a way of religion.

-quote 4-
- Winthrop viewed the MA Bay Co. as an example for the future colonists and colonial efforts. They were sort of a test to see if they could succeed.
- "City upon a hill," means being the role model or example of a Godly colony. They were looked at as an example of a colony built by God, and every one was waiting to see if the colony could survive.
